Fall Into First Grade
This month we will be brainstorming ideas for our writing journal, and forming complete sentences in the right word order.
We will meet four authors and illustrators of the stories we read in class and learn why they chose to write the stories that they did. Sequential order will help us with reading comprehension. Learning new words to add to our word book and reading lots of stories to Mrs. B. and Mrs. Fox will keep us quite busy.
We will be starting our first ever spelling list and test. Yes, that’s right, we are learning to spell word families together.
In Math we will be starting a new chapter. We will be finding ways to make groups of numbers up to twelve, solve problems by making a table, reviewing fewer and more, working with odd and even numbers and finding missing parts to ten. We will use oodles of manipulatives (two color counters, hippopotamus and my personal favorite, beans where we play Spill the Beans. It’s noisy but fun!
In Science we will be working with plants. Having a Science Journal to write and record all our observations and experiments makes us feel like real scientists. Learning about what plants need, where you can find them, their parts and why they are important along with experiments and videos will help us truly understand how wonderful plants are.
Enrichment starts Monday in the last week of September. Ms. Heyduke will visit us and surprise us with new ways to look at things.
We will be starting a computer station as part of our morning seatwork. We have two computers so we are learning to take our turns. Everyone gets to go on it before we go onto a new lesson.
Guest readers start this month and “Get to Know Your Classmate” bulletin board does too.
